HandThe Sint Maarten Bar has been in existence since 1989. The Bar is the professional association for lawyers on Sint Maarten, who fall under the jurisdiction of the Joint Court of Justice of Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten and Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba, with its main office in Curacao. The Bar is an association and is incorporated.

Because of the international character of Sint Maarten where, in addition to Dutch, especially English and Spanish are the official languages, the association is also referred to as ‘Lawyer’s Association of Sint Maarten’ and ‘Colegio de Abogados de San Martin’. Membership in the Bar is not compulsory on Sint Maarten, registration at the Joint Court of Justice of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba is compulsory, on the other hand. 275 lawyers are registered on the list of the Court. Approximately 60 of these work on Sint Maarten.

SpreekstoelThe objective of the Association is to promote the administration of justice and the legal certainty in the Netherlands Antilles. It would like to attain this by giving support and information to those persons who have a legal practice or who wish to have one, through publications and the promotion of ethics and jurisprudence among its members. Moreover, the Association promotes the interests of its members at all authorities designated to this end and promotes cooperation with other organisations, which pursue similar objectives as well as fellowship among the members. The Association (as yet) has no statutory powers.
